IYT has always believed that training should be made up of a combination of classroom and practical hands on instruction.

Its success has been built on the quality of its courses and the excellence of its instructors, who form the backbone of the IYT training system. All IYT instructors are required to have:

  • Crew on a vessel up to a maximum length of 78 ft /24 metres
  • in coastal waters up to 20 miles offshore
  • in daylight hours and in fair conditions with moderate wind and sea conditions

As a general rule every school should have at least one instructor at the MOY Instructor level or an acceptable alternative such as the MCA Master Mariner (Instructor) level.

All instructors must be associated with a school or schools to teach courses.  Freelance instructors cannot teach without being attached to and registered with a school or schools.  We do not allow freelance instructors.

Instructors are expected to undergo continuing professional development and they must remain in good standing.

Instructors can apply to be approved to teach a range of recreational or professional courses or a combination of both.
