Qualify your Team

The IYT Instructor Programme

IYT has always believed that training should be made up of a combination of classroom and practical hands on instruction. Its success has been built on the quality of its courses and the excellence of its instructors, who form the backbone of the IYT training system.

As a general rule every school should have at least one instructor at the Master of Yachts  Instructor level or an acceptable alternative.

  • All instructors must be associated with a school or schools to teach IYT courses.  Freelance instructors cannot teach without being attached to and registered with an IYT partner school or schools.  We do not allow freelance instructors (except in exceptional circumstances).
  • Instructors are expected to undergo continuing professional development and they must remain in good  standing.
  • Instructors can apply to be approved to teach a range of recreational, professional, diveboat or commercial IYT courses or a combination of all.

How to Become an Instructor

The preferred route to becoming an IYT instructor is for applicants to have graduated from the IYT instructor training programme itself. Instructor training clinics are carried out at numerous IYT partner schools around the world that are authorised to do so. However we realize that a “one size fits all” does not always work, therefore, we are prepared to consider applications from candidates who hold instructor qualifications from other maritime organisations.  These will be evaluated on a case by case basis.

Pre-requisites in terms of qualifications and experience will vary depending on the level and complexity of the particular course.  Minimum entry requirements for all instructors are:

  • Current medical fitness certificate (less than 2 years old) with no color blindness or diabetes.
  • Successful completion of an IYT Instructor Training Course (or acceptable alternative with IYT orientation)
