IYT-MSWI BoatMaster Course

BoatMaster License Grade 1 and 2

This is a course for those candidates wishing to command commercial vessels operating under the SCV code for Caribbean Countries on vessels which are 5 metres or more in length overall and less than 24 metres in length.  The Code applies to vessels operating commercially, trading in the Caribbean Trading Area.

Caribbean Trading Area means the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea proper including the bays and seas therein and that portion of the Atlantic Ocean within the boundary constituted by a rhumb line from a point on the east coast of the United States of America in latitude 32o 00′ north to the intersection 20o 00′ north, 59o 00′ west; thence a rhumb line to the intersection of 7o 20′ north, 50o west; thence a rhumb line drawn southwesterly to the eastern boundary of French Guiana.

This course has been developed in conjunction with International Yacht Training and Maritime School of the West Indies (MSWI).

Passenger vessels under this Code shall:

  • Only operate at a distance of 20 miles or less from the nearest harbour or safe refuge
  • Carry no more than 150 passengers, and
  • Where overnight accommodation is provided, carry no more than 50 passengers on overnight voyages. ENTRY STANDARD

After successfully completing the course, IYT will issue a “Boat Master Grade 1 or 2 Certificate”.

Candidate must then submit the following to the Maritime Authority that applies to them:

  • For BoatMaster License Grade 2:
    • Be 21 years of age or over
    • The IYT-MSWI Course Completion Certificate
    • Valid Medical Fitness Certificate – Fit for Sea Duty
    • Have seagoing service of not less than 2 months in accordance with the requirements of the Administration
    • Hold the following STCW qualifications:
    • Basic Sea Survival – e.g., IMO Model Course 1.19
    • Elementary First Aid – e.g., IMO Model Course 1.13
    • Basic Firefighting Course – e.g., IMO Model Course 1.20
    • Personal Safety and Social Responsibility – e.g., IMO Model Course 1.21
    • VHF Certificate
    • GMDSS general operator certificate:
    • Have passed an examination for Boatmaster Grade 2
  • For BoatMaster License Grade 1:
    • Be 21 years of age or over
    • The IYT-MSWI Course Completion Certificate
    • Valid Medical Fitness Certificate – Fit for Sea Duty
    • Have completed approved seagoing service of not less than 4 months in accordance with the requirements of the Administration;
    • Hold the following STCW qualifications:
    • Basic Sea Survival – e.g., IMO Model Course 1.19
    • Elementary First Aid – e.g., IMO Model Course 1.13
    • Basic Firefighting Course – e.g., IMO Model Course 1.20
    • Personal Safety and Social Responsibility – e.g., IMO Model Course 1.21
    • VHF Certificate
    • GMDSS general operator certificate
    • Have passed an examination for Boatmaster Grade 1
